World Rugby are investigating to determine whether New Zealand fielded 8 players in their Sydney Sevens match against Australia on Saturday.

New Zealand were awarded a penalty in the final minute and they used the penalty to score a try which they used to score a try and level the match at 17 all.

Controversially the match referee who appears to have missed the 8th New Zealand player is none other than South African Craig Joubert who famously awarded Australia a penalty in the Rugby World Cup quarter final against Scotland.

Video footage of the match has surfaced which appears to show that in the run up to Ardie Savea’s try and now World Rugby are investigating the matter.

Thanks to the draw New Zealand topped Pool A on points difference but they could now potentially lose all points for the match if Joubert and the officials have indeed made a blunder.

Australia are set to play England in the quarterfinals while New Zealand get a quarter final against the USA unless World Rugby step in.
