Vermeulen out of Stormers Super Rugby qualifier

Stormers captain Duane Vermeulen has been ruled out of his team’s Super Rugby
qualifying match against the Brumbies this weekend.

Vermeulen will miss this weekend’s Super Rugby play off match against the Brumbies
at Newlands in Cape Town on Saturday.

Vermeulen missed last week’s final round match and was a late withdrawal the
week before against the Lions.

The No.8 pulled out of the Lions match after suffering with a a severe neck
spasm but he was cleared to play by a Neurosurgeon.

The Springbok No.8 could also miss the Stormers Super Rugby Semi-final if they
qualify for the second week of the play offs.

The injury could also keep him out beyond the Super Rugby final according to
Stormers coach Allister Coetzee.

The Stormers coach said that he was hopeful that Vermeulen would be available
for a potential semi-final but they will not be taking any chances.

“Duane is improving a hell of a lot but I don’t think it’s
enough for this weekend. Rule him out for this weekend’s game. Going forward
hopefully there’s still a great opportunity for him,” Coetzee told

“It’s just about getting Duane to be pain free and his range. There’s
a hell of a lot of improvement in terms of his range, so it’s coming along

“If you look at another week or two, then who knows, but one wants to
be absolutely sure. You don’t want to put him back again if he gets another
knock. So the decision is based on making sure that Duane will continue once
he starts again.”
