Jones close to finalising England backroom staff

England head coach Eddie Jones says he will take an arrogant team to Australia

New England head coach Eddie Jones is near to finalising his back room staff and Stuart Lancaster’s assistants will find out later this week if they are staying.

Eddie Jones arrived in England last week and has wasted no time in getting on with the job and according to sources has met with key men such as Andy Farrell (attack), Graham Rowntree (forwards) and Mike Catt (skills).

It is also understood that Jones met with England captain Chris Borthwick on the weekend to discuss the England captaincy.

Farrell, Rowntree and Catt were all given six year contracts by the RFU last year but they are unlikely to remain as it is understood that new Bristol Assistant coach Steve Borthwick has been sounded out for the job.

Former England captain Borthwick was Jones’ assistant in the World Cup with the Japanese side that beat South Africa in their opening match.

Borthwick is likely to be replace Rowntree as forwards coach while Farrell’s job appears to be under threat from Saracens defence coach Paul Gustard.

Jones was in the stands on the weekend when Newcastle hosted Saracens and could not have been given a better showing of Gustard’s defensive structures as Sarries kept the Falcons try less and won the match 3-38.

Mike Catt’s position as skills coach also looks to be under three after his training ground argument with Danny Cipriani which saw senior players siding with the Sale Sharks flyhalf.

Another name that could appear on Jones backroom staff list is that of Saracens forwards coach Alex Sanderson.

In 2008 Jones in charge of Saracens and had Borthwick (and Andy Farrell) as his co-captains while Gustard Sanderson were his assistant coaches.
