Castres give French skipper Six Nations boost

Newly-installed France skipper Lionel Nallet enjoyed the perfect warm-up for the Six Nations when he led his Castres side to a shock 15-14 win over French title chasers Clermont on Saturday.

It was only Castres’ third win of the season and it dented their opponents’ hopes of eating into the lead of Top 14 leaders Toulouse, who opened up a six-point gap on Friday with a 34-3 win at Auch.

“It was a victory which we fought for and put us back into mid-table,” said Nallet, who will lead defending champions France in their opening Six Nations clash in Scotland next Sunday.

“We were strong in defence and the win underlined the good spirit in the club.”

Clermont were on course for a 14-12 win until Castres fly-half Romain Teulet landed his fifth penalty of the match with eight minutes left.
