Harry Ellis on the mend

Leicester Tigers’ and England scrum-half Harry Ellis is well on his way to returning to full fitness after a knee injury ruled him out for the past seven months.

The 25-year-old had knee-reconstruction surgery after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in the Guinness Premiership play-off semi-final victory over Bristol last season.

Instead of lamenting on what might have been, given he was first choice England scrum-half heading towards the World Cup, Ellis is focusing entirely on his rehabilitation and a return to action with the Tigers.

“This is the longest spell I have been out of the game through injury and I can’t lie, it has been very frustrating,” he told The Leicester Mercury.

“Having said that, I hope I can come back a lot stronger, fitter and determined.

“I have been doing lots of work with the Tigers physio and conditioning staff, and have been doing two weight sessions every day in the week.

“I will be running soon – but I can’t really put a date on when I will be back in action, and I don’t want to make the mistake of coming back too soon.”

Ellis’ injury cost him not only a place at the recent World Cup but also a place in the Guinness Premiership and Heineken Cup finals at the tail end of last season. However he is hopeful that he can work his way back into England contention by the start of the Six Nations in February.

For the time being, though, it is more of the same. Hard graft, good food and early mornings.

“Sometimes, I am up at 6am because I am on a completely different schedule to the other lads,” he said.

“I often bump into them during the day but we don’t train at the same times.

“I have also been keen to maintain a good diet while I have been in rehab. I don’t want to come back with a lot of fat. I am training hard but am eating a lot of the good stuff.

“I lost a lot of weight when I did the injury which was quite worrying. I always try hard to keep my weight right and to suddenly lose 10kgs just like that was a shock. But I have got that back now and am determined to come back even stronger.”
