Ricoh Arena to host European clash

Heineken Cup champions Wasps have switched the opening match of their trophy defence against 2006 title-holders Munster to Coventry’s Ricoh Arena.

The move to a stadium which usually hosts matches for the city’s football club will increase capacity for the high-profile game from 10,000 at Adams Park to 32,000.

Last season the stadium also hosted Wasps’ 30-13 semi-final victory over Northampton Saints and director of rugby Ian McGeechan believes moving the November 10 fixture makes sense.

“This has the potential to be a very special game, and I am delighted that we are returning to the Ricoh Arena,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to returning and I hope, with the increased capacity, Wasps supporters will come along in numbers to see us begin the defence of our European crown.”

Munster boast some of the most committed travelling fans in the game and the news has also come as a major plus for coach Declan Kidney.

“I’m delighted first of all that a venue has been confirmed because it means we can go ahead and finalise our arrangements to travel,” he said, speaking to the club’s official website.

“The venue itself seems like a good rugby decision and full credit to Wasps for that.”
