France fall and Argentina rise in rankings

France’s World Cup misery grew a little heavier with news that Friday’s 17-12 defeat to Argentina in Paris caused them to fall two places in the IRB World Rankings.

The RWC hosts are now down to fifth in the standings after being leapfrogged by both their victors and the Springboks, whose emphatic 59-7 win over Samoa on Sunday saw them climb back on to the podium.

Meanwhile, the Irish pay the penalty for their unconvincing 32-17 win over Namibia in Bordeaux – they fall one place to sixth.

Points earned in Rugby World cup matches count for double the normal amount so big fluctuations can be expected during the Rugby World cup.
