Lions beat Queensland Reds in Brisbane

Out of the last five Super Rugby matches between the Brisbane based Reds and the Johannesburg based Lions the Reds have won three and the Lions two.

The Reds kick off and we are underway.

2.00: The Reds win the line out on the Lions put in. The Lions turn the ball over and run at the Reds.

3.00: The Lions go through 8 phases and they concede a penalty for not releasing the ball.

4.00: The Reds kick upfield but the ball goes into touch. Overcooked.

7.00: The Reds win a penalty from the scrum. Cooper kicks for touch and the line out.

10.00: The Reds win the line out and go through 8 phases before they are awarded another penalty. Cooper lines up the posts.

11.00: Cooper takes the penalty kick, slots it and puts the Reds into the lead.

13.00: The Lions work the ball upfield and they push the Reds back. Harold Vorster goes over in the corner. We go to the TMO to check and its good. TRY!

14.00: Elton Jantjies takes the conversion kick but he misses. The Lions lead.

18.00: Penalty to the Lions after a collapsed scrum. Jantjies kicks for touch.

19.00: The Lions knock on as they clear from the line out. Reds scrum.

21.00: Free kick to the Reds. They tap and go. The Reds go through 6 phases and James O’Connor knocks on.

23.00: Penalty to the Lions from the scrum. Jantjies kicks for touch and sets up the line out.

25.00: Quade Cooper and Franco Mostert disagree on something but it dies down.

26.00: Penalty to the Reds. Cooper kicks for touch. The Reds win the line out, its scrappy but they get the ball out but it goes to ground outwide after James O’Connor had almost slipped through.

30.00: The Reds win a line out on the Lions throw. They try to attack but the Lions force them sideways and then the ball is lost. We go back for a penalty – not rolling away – to the Reds.

32.00: Cooper lines up the penalty kick but misses.

35.00: The Lions win a penalty from the scrum – front row angling in. Jantjies kicks for touch.

37.00; The Reds steal the Lions ball at the line. They initially run it and then kick deep.

39.00: The Lions enjoy a period of pressure in the Reds half but as they recycle the Reds concede a penalty. Jantjies will kick for posts.

40.00: The siren sounds for half time as Jantjies lines up the kick. He nails it.

43.00: The Lions show some good continuity but then they knock on giving the Reds a scrum.

45.00: James O’Connor finds a hole and takes it. The Reds get into the Lions 22 but they knock on.

48.00: The Lions kick for touch and the Reds make a mess of the line out and the Lions pass to Warwick Tecklenburg who scores. TRY!

49.00: Jantjies slots the conversion.

50.00: The Reds look to hit back and they get the ball up to the Lions 5m line and Ruan Combrinck takes out Will Genia so he is yellow carded.

51.00: The Reds win the ball from the line out and drive over the line. We go to the TMO to check but it looks short. No try. Reds get a 5m scrum.

52.00; The Reds win the scrum and drive over the line but the referee awards a penalty TRY to the Lions for twisting. Cooper adds the conversion.

58.00: Penalty from the scrum to the Reds. Front row collapsing. Cooper kicks for touch.

60.00: Penalty to the Lions after the line out for changing lanes. The Lions kick for touch.

62.00: Quade Cooper tries to run through the Lions but is stopped. The Reds recycle the ball and they go wide. O’Connor makes a break but then concedes a penalty for holding on.

67.00: Quade Cooper makes a break and gains a lot of ground. He is caught but the Reds recycle and Samu Kerevi bashes over for the TRY!

69.00: Cooper takes the conversion kick and nails it putting the Reds into the lead.

71.00: Penalty in front to the Lions. Jantjies takes the kick – after having to reset it. He nails it. The Lions lead again.

74.00: Scrum penalty to the Reds. They kick for touch and win the line out. They run at the Lions and race down the wing. Chris Feauai-Sautia gets close to scoring but puts a foot in touch.

76.00: The Reds get the put in but the Lions get the ball and Jantjies kicks for territory. Cooper gets the ball and tries to counter attack.

78.00; Penalty to the Reds. Lachie Turner kicks for touch and the line out. .

79.00: The Reds win the line out. The ball comes out slowly. They set up the drop goal.

80.00: The siren sounds. Cooper goes for the drop goal but it is charged down.

Thats it. The Lions win.
