Hurricanes prop Schwalger ruled out until June

Hurricanes prop John Schwalger has been ruled out for the majority of the 2015 Super Rugby season due to a blood clotting problem.

Former All Black Schwalger initially suffered the problem last year although it was initially thought to be a chest infection.

Schwalger played just six games for the Hurricanes in 2014 and he also missed Wellington’s ITM Cup campaign.

The prop was all set to return this season but last month he got flu which left him bedridden for five days and the clots have returned and he is not allowed any contact until June.

Schwalger has to take medication which thins out his blood but also increased the risk of him suffering cuts or bruises.

The clots generally form in Schwalger’s legs and can spread around the body when he is dormant or on an aeroplane.

“I was looking forward to jamming with the Hurricanes and playing with Ma’a (Nonu) one last time,” Schwalger told the NZHerald..

“It sucks, to be honest. When I found out the second time I was close to breaking down but once I saw the specialist he gave me a bit of hope which is something for me to look forward to. “

“So now we’ve got to have a plan that once I do come off the medicine and I’m all good, we’ve just got to get it sorted before it ever makes its way up to my lungs.”

Thirty-one-year-old Schwalger spent two years in France but returned to the Hurricanes in 2013 and now comes off contract at the end of the season.

Schwalger said that his goal is to play the final two games of the Super Rugby season in June, although that could extend if the Hurricanes were to make the playoffs.

“It sucks but you can only do so much to put yourself back on that field and I’ll do anything to get back there.”
