Smith linked to Waratahs and Reds in Super rugby

London Irish Director of Rugby Brian Smith has decided to leave the Premiership Rugby club and return home to Australia where he has been linked with two Super Rugby sides.

The former England attack coach has already been linked with the Queensland Reds as well as current Super Rugby champions the Waratahs in Sydney.

Smith was part of England’s Rugby World Cup coaching team at the 2011 world cup but has been associated with London Irish since 2005.

The former flyhalf Smith was born in St George, Queensland and played for Queensland Reds from 1985 to 1987.

Smith also played rugby league in the New South Wales Rugby League for Balmain Tigers and Eastern Suburbs so he has links with both of the Super Rugby regions.

In addition Smith has coached rugby at the Ricoh Rugby Club in Japan Sydney, Bath Rugby, the youth setup in New South Wales and was coaching co-ordinator at the ACT Brumbies.

Current Waratahs coach Michael Cheika has already taken up a new position as Australia head coach and will leave the Sydney Super Rugby side after their 2015 season.

The Reds have Richard Graham as their current head coach but in 2014 the Reds won just 5 out of 16 matches.

Meanwhile former Ireland coach Declan Kidney has been mentioned as Smith’s replacement with London Irish.
