Former Chiefs back Kahui eyeing SuperRugby return

Former All Black and Chiefs mid-fielder Richard Kahui has revealed that he is considering returning to New Zealand to play Super Rugby.

Kahui left New Zealand in 2013 to play for Toshiba Brave Lupus in Japan’s Top League but he is now considering another stint in Super Rugby with an eye on playing for the All Blacks at the Rugby World Cup.

Kahui chose to play in Japan after suffering with several shoulder injuries but in Japan his shoulders have taken a lot less punishment and he is considering another crack at the All Blacks.

“Hopefully over the next couple of weeks we’ll get that opportunity to make the decision either way so hopefully the body is good and then we can come home and bring my family home but otherwise if the body’s not good then we’ll probably stay here,” Kahui told 3News.

“The World Cup is coming up so even if you’re not part of the team it’s great to be home and just to have a chance to, at least, put your hand up.”

Twenty-nine-year-old Kahui said that if he did return to New Zealand his preference would be to return to his former team the Chiefs and play with his old team mate Sonny Bill Williams in 2015.

“Been watching those guys since I left and it’s a fairly special team and something you want to be a part of,” added Kahui.
