Wales release Warburton back to Cardiff Blues

Wales captain Sam Warburton has been released back to his club Cardiff Blues for this weekend’s Celtic League round of matches.

With the Six Nations taking a break after the second round of fixtures, the Welsh Rugby Union said 10 players in all would be heading back to play for regional teams.

As well as the Cardiff Blues pair of flanker Warburton and prop Gethin Jenkins, the list included the Ospreys trio of Dan Biggar, Rhys Webb and Ryan Bevington, as well as Scarlets prop Samson Lee.

Warburton made his first start in more than two months after recovering from a shoulder injury during defending champions Wales’ crushing 23-6 defeat by Ireland in Dublin on Saturday.

But he is now set to play for the Blues at home to Glasgow this coming Saturday, ahead of Wales’ return to Six Nations action against France in Cardiff on Friday, February 21.

Wales’ defeat by Ireland was their heaviest in the Six Nations since Kiwi coach Warren Gatland took charge for the 2008 campaign.

They are currently fourth in the table and face an uphill battle in their quest to become the first team to win three successive outright Six Nations titles.
