Spies enthusiastic about the year ahead with Bulls

Bulls Super Rugby captain Pierre Spies says that even though the 2014 Bulls team will full of new and youthful energy they will be constantly aware of the winning culture that made the Pretoria franchise South Africa’s most successful Super Rugby team.

Spies says that there will be constant reminders that the Bulls have won three Super Rugby titles and featured in numerous semi-finals, the last of which was in 2013.

“We have lost a number of senior players and that was not ideal, but the benefit of that is that a new energy and heaps of young potential has now come into the side,” Spies told Rapport.

“It is nice to work with youngsters that are so keen to learn. It is a benefit not always appreciated.”

Spies says that he is well rested after he tore a bicep that has kept him out of all rugby since June 2013.

“I am certainly well rested en managed to spend a lot of time with the family. The downside of injury is that you miss out on actually playing rugby. I am hungry to play and want to use all that energy and motivation in 2014,” he said.

As Bulls captain Spies will have to inspire the younger players to perform as well as ensuring that the experienced players in his side deliver as well.

Despite the pressure and responsibility Spies says that his goal is to enjoy playing rugby this year.

“Hopefully I will be able to enjoy my rugby this year, but make no mistake, I will still try to be the best player in my position. Rugby is all about constantly improving your game,” he said.

“So I will be keen to have a great season for the Bulls and if needed, the Springboks too.”
