Lions vs Stormers Super Rugby preview

One of the worst records against any team in Super Rugby is the Lions record against Stormers as they have not beaten the Cape team since 2002.

The Lions have lost the last 11 straight matches against the Stormers although some of those losses were under the Cats brand.

Back in 1998 the Lions started well against the Stormers and won every match between 1998 and 2001 but after the Lions lost 29-24 at Newlands in Cape Town the wins have all belonged to the Stormers.

Overall then the Lions and the Stormers have played each other 15 times and the Lions have only won four times.

On average the when the two teams meet the score is Lions 20 Stormers 26. In Johannesburg where this weekend’s match will be played the average score is Lions 21 and Stormers 24.

Lions coach John Mitchell said earlier this week that his injury problems were the worst that he had ever seen in his 16 year career.

Worryingly for the Lions their losses in Johannesburg to the Stormers appear to be getting bigger. Between 2002 and 2008 all of the results in the city were within 12 points. However the last two losses- in 2010 and 2011 – were by bigger margins than 12 points.

The Bookies have given the  Lions an 8 point start for this match – with an offer of Bet 5 and Get 50 in Bets. The Lions have lost too many players to win this match. The Stormers should win by 7.

This match will be shown on TV in NZ, Aus, SA and in the UK on the Sky Sports website.

Average score: Lions 20 Stormers 26
