Dean Richards to take charge of Newcastle

Former Harlequins boss Dean Richards is set to replace Gary Gold at Newcastle Falcons and will be named Director of Rugby for next season.

Richards is currently suspended for faking a blood injury but his suspension finished in August which means he would be free to take the Newcastle job.

Richards appointment will be controversial after the ‘Bloodgate’ scandal but he has stuck by the rules of his suspension and kept out of the game as instructed and shown great remorse.

Gold was appointed by Newcastle on a temporary basis with a six month contract but is expected to return to South Africa after the contract ends.

The former England forward was given the three year ban when he was in charge of Aviva Premiership club Harlequins but made his name in coaching with Leicester Tigers having led them to four Premiership titles and two Heineken Cups.

Newcastle are currently at the bottom of the Premiership table but in 2005 Richards took charge of Harlequins who were in the second tier at the time and led them straight back into the Premiership.
