Crusaders win NZ arm wrestle

This was a live match report.

Preview.

The Hurricanes have only ever once won in Christchurch (back in 2001) and their last victory against the Crusaders was three years ago, in Wellington.

Overall, in 14 Super Rugby encounters between the two sides, the Hurricanes have managed just three wins.

However, ‘Canes hardman Jerry Collins does not believe in statistics and remains confident the Class of 2007 will produce the kind of performance that will secure a win and keep their S14 play-off hopes alive.

He also felt last year’s Final will have no bearing on what happens this week.

“Half of the guys that will play on Friday did not play in last year’s Final [at a misty Jade Stadium],” he said, adding that he simply does not believe in looking to past results for guidance as to what will happen now.

“The record books are for those dudes who sit in front of the TV and eat twisties, and sit with their clipboards,” Collins said.

The Crusaders have also made it clear that past events will have no bearing on this game.

Match Detail

Dan Carter starts the match and we are underway. The Hurricanes give away the first penalty and Dan Carter puts the Crusaders 3 points ahead.

The Hurricanes turn the ball over and they get a 5 scrum. Ma’a Nonu fires through the defence to score the first try as the crowd is silenced. Not a hand was laid on Ma’a Nonu.

The Hurricanes are putting the Crusaders under huge pressure. The ball gets into the Crusaders 25 and they are forced to kick it out to stop a fast attacking Hurricanes team.

In true Cruaders style  Corey Flynn break through four tackles to score in the corner for the Crusaders. Carter slots the conversion and the ‘Saders are back in front.

Ross Filipo scores the Crusaders next try and Carter converts.

The Crusaders give away a very kickable penalty and the Hurricanes Piri Weepu slots it.

Piri Weepu has another shot at goal but misses so the scores stay the same with about 7 minutes to go before the half time.

As the last seconds tick away for the half the Hurricanes get a kickable penalty and Weepu kicks it as the whistle goes.

Half time score was Crusaders 17 Hurricanes 13

At the start of the second half there was a long delay for an injury to Jerry Collins who was stretchered off the field.

After the Collins injury the game has settled down a little. Collins is said to be fine but was taken off as a precaution after he heard a funny noise during a collision. He is said to be conscious and fine.

In the 56th minute Ma’a Nonu was sent to the bin for being offensive (possibly to Steve Walsh-  How you you blame the guy? heh).

The Crusaders came close to scoring the first points of the second half with a try but were called back for a forward pass. They then turned the ball over after the scrum and a penalty was given for offside. Carter went for posts and put the Hurricanes further ahead.
