Wasps can get it right for Bayonne: Young

London Wasps Coach Dai Young says he is confident that they can avenge their 19-11 Amlin Challenge Cup loss to Bayonne when the two teams meet again on Thursday.

Young does however add condition that Wasps will only be able to turn the tables on Bayonne if Wasps can find a clinical edge.

Young’s side welcome the Top 14 outfit to Adams Park in the second leg of their double-header with quarter-final qualification still up for grabs.

While frustrated, Young said that there were plenty of positives from the defeat at Stade Jean Dauger and his side can get get things right in two day’s time.

“I was very proud of the effort of our young team against a star-studded Bayonne side who I thought we made look very ordinary at times,” Young told ERCRugby.

“We had four 20-year-olds on the pitch at one point and we more than held our own against a much more experienced outfit. The frustrating thing for all of us that we came away without even a point after making four or five clean line breaks.

“That’s where we are at the moment, dominating games and creating some fantastic opportunities but just not quite taking them. We are working on it and though there is no magic formula, I fully believe it will come right.”

The crucial clash will be Wasps’ 100th match in Europe and Young is under no illusions of how important the encounter is. Bayonne currently top Pool Three and lie three points ahead of Wasps who lie second.

“We are doing plenty of positive things at the moment but our Achilles heel in the last few weeks has been not being ruthless enough when the opportunities present themselves whether that’s scoring tries or kicking points,” added Young.

“Bayonne are a team of real class with a lot of World Cup experience and if we play anything below the standard of last weekend we’ll be punished. “They aren’t going to be phased about coming to play away from home, so this is a big task for us.”
