Top 14 Rugby Club sign controversial SA prop

Top 14 newboys Bordeaux-Begles signed experienced South African prop Jacobus “Bees” Roux on Sunday on a temporary contract after they lost four props to injury.

The 29-year-old — who played for Clermont three years ago — will arrive at the beginning of next week as a replacement for Nicolas Decamps, who has ruptured ligaments in his left knee.

Roux will be reunited with scrum-half Heini Adams, who played with him at South African side Blue Bulls but joined Bordeaux-Begles before last season.

Roux was discharged with immediate effect by the Blue Bulls earlier this week after he was convicted of killing a South African Police Officer and then whilst on suspension trained with a rival rugby team.

The 29-year-old Roux reached a plea bargain agreement with the South African government and avoided jail time. He agreed to pay metro police officer Johannes Mogale’s family R750,000 and was given a five year suspended sentence on September 9.

Bordeaux-Begles will welcome back front row forwards Silviu Florea and Ole Avei from the World Cup this week, but have already lost props Boris Bethery, Decamps, Patrick Toetu and Franck Labbe all to injury.

Bordeaux have made a respectable start to their campaign, presently lying fifth from bottom on nine points with two victories from their six matches.
