Connacht beat Dragons in ProDirect 12

Connacht cemented their place as the kings of the narrow win at home to Dragons after an exciting second half comeback to win 17-13 at the Sportsground.

The Galway side continued their fantastic start to the season by clinching their four point victory with tries from Gavin Duffy and Eion Griffin helping them to close the gap Dragons had created in the first half.

Dragons had taken to the pitch determined to succeed off the back of their victory against Aironi last week and began strongly. An early penalty for Jason Tovey opened their account and after holding off Brian Tuohy just short of the whitewash around the half hour, Matthew Pewtner created the perfect opportunity for Nathan Williams to set the visitors’ up with a convincing lead.

However, the hosts were determined to extend their tally of victories against the Dragons, and came out for the second half with renewed vigour. Connacht maintained pressure on their visitors until Tiernan O’Halloran managed to squeeze through their defence for Eoin Griffin’s try.

From there on in there was little doubt that Connacht were on a winning mission and within ten minutes the second try came for Gavin Duffy. Dragon’s cause looked to be lost and the visitors were left playing a defensive game until the last.

This win puts Connacht at 3rd on the Pro12 table, a far cry from their performance over the last few seasons. Should Eric Elwood’s side maintain this winning momentum, the Pro12 could be a very different competition this year.
