Free State Cheetahs crush Pumas in Currie Cup

The Free State Cheetahs trounced the Pumas 80-16 in the Currie Cup in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

The Free State Cheetahs ran in 11 tries as they beat the Pumas.

Eighthman Boom Prinsloo scored a hat-trick of tries in the try-fest.

The match started at a breakneck pace with the home-side making their intentions
clear from the outset.

The Pumas, however, opened up the scoring with flyhalf Ricardo Croy succeeding
with a penalty conversion.

The men from Bloemfontein soon after started their try scoring spree with winger
Philip Snyman stepping outside then inside again to score, with flyhalf Sias
Ebersohn succeeding with his first of six conversions.

Prinsloo scored his first try shortly after the end of the first quarter of
the match to give the Cheetahs a 11 point lead.

The visitors succeeded with another penalty conversion but this only delayed
their fate.

The Cheetahs then went on a rampage as they shifted the ball around.

With eight minutes left in the first half prop WP Nel scored shortly after
Pumas centre Tiaan Marx was yellow carded.

Marx’s send-off ended up being the Puma’s biggest blow as the Cheetahs scored
three five-pointers in his absence.

Prinsloo went over the tryline for the second time shortly before the interval
and in the process giving his side their bonus point try.

As the bruised Pumas side left the field for the break they were trailing by
22 points with no idea that their day would get even worse.

The Cheetahs scored two tries within four minutes of each other shortly after
the start of the second half to stifle any ideas of a Pumas comeback.

While it took the home side 40 minutes to score their first four tries of the
match it took them ten minutes to score the second four.

With the Cheetahs leading by a half a century after 50 minutes the Pumas scored
their first try of the match when flanker Jaco Bouwer went over from a driving
maul.

That did not phase the Cheetahs as they merely carried on with their own scoring
festival.

Replacement prop Marcel van der Merwe scored his first of two tries with 20
minutes left in the match.

Three minutes later Prinsloo completed his hat-trick with replacement flyhalf
Johan Goosen converting to take their score to 70 points.

To add insult to injury Goosen succeeded with a dropgoal from inside his own
half.

With seven minutes left in the match the limping Pumas scored a consolation
try with Deon Scholtz sprinting through for the try.

It was, however, Van der Merwe, who had the last say of the match as he scored
the Cheetahs’ final try to rub the last bit of salt into the Puma’s gaping wounds.
