France lose Mermoz for at least two weeks

Injury-prone France centre Maxime Mermoz has been ruled out for at least two weeks after spraining an ankle in Saturday’s Rugby World Cup warm-up win against Ireland.

Coach Marc Lievremont said on Sunday that the 25-year-old would miss next week’s test against Ireland in Dublin.

Three other players also picked up knee injuries during the 19-12 win in Bordeaux – lock Romain Millo-Chluski, No 8 Imanol Harinordoquy and veteran back Damien Traille.

“It’s a bit more of a problem for Max (Mermoz) with a slight sprain and a layoff the duration of which is difficult to foresee today (Sunday) but we can think of a minimum two weeks,” said Lievremont.

Mermoz, capped nine times, had not played since February 5 after injuring a shoulder during the Six Nations match against Scotland.

He was substituted after 27 minutes by David Skrela with fly-half Francois Trinh-Duc moving to centre.

Trinh-Duc however could miss the second warm-up in Dublin as his wife is due to give birth in the coming days.
