England’s Ashton in doubt for Wales clash

England winger Chris Ashton may be ruled out of the Rugby World Cup warm-up Test against Wales on Saturday after injuring his ankle in training, according to team manager Martin Johnson.

The Northampton flyer rolled his ankle on Thursday and will face a late fitness test ahead of the meeting at the Millennium Stadium.

“He’s a bit sore so we’ll see how he is tomorrow. Hopefully he will play,” said Johnson who admitted that with England opening their World Cup campaign against Argentina in less than a month, he was inclined to be cautious.

“I safely say ‘yes’, we would be more careful (given the World Cup is looming). We want guys to play and we are hopeful he will play.

“If not, we’ve got Matt Banahan on the bench and we’ve brought Delon (Armitage) too, so we will make a call about who will play if Chris can’t.”

England beat Wales 23-19 in their first warm-up match last weekend at Twickenham.
