Bulls vs Lions Super Rugby Preview

The Lions will be aiming to tame a Bulls team that boast double the amount of Super Rugby caps when these sides collide at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday.

Flyhalf Elton Jantjies, No.8 Warren Whiteley and flanker Joshua Strauss all made their Super Rugby debut this season, while the likes of fullback Jaco Taute, prop Pat Cilliers, winger Lionel Mapoe and hooker Martin Bezuidenhout each have less than ten Super Rugby caps to their names.

In contrast, the Bulls boast three players – captain Victor Matfield (113), Danie Rossouw (105) and Fourie du Preez (103) – who have each surpassed a century of games at this level.

In Bakkies Botha (89), Morne Steyn (77), Gary Botha (75), Wynand Olivier (75), Gurthro Steenkamp (70) and Derick Kuun (60) the Bulls have a further six players with more than 50 appearances.

These nine players have amongst them an amazing combined total of 767 Super Rugby caps. The total number of combined caps in the Bulls’ 22 from their game against the Stormers was 1114.

In contrast, the Lions’ only have three players who have more than 50 games at Super Rugby level.

They are Wikus van Heerden (83), Rory Kockott (55) and Jano Vermaak (50). If they play this weekend, Franco van der Merwe and Cobus Grobbelaar will be making their 50th appearance at this level.

The Lions’ combined total of caps in their match last weekend against the Force was 528.

The Lions have not beaten the Bulls in their last six clashes and have not beaten the Bulls at Loftus since 2002.

On average when the Bulls play the Lions they score 31 points and the Lions score 26 points. At Loftus those averages increase to 39 for the Bulls and 29 for the Lions.

When these teams met in Round One the Lions kept the Bulls scoreless in the second half and pushed them all the way but had left it too late and went down 20-24 at Ellis Park. Even though the Bulls are clearly struggling and the Lions are improving and have ended their losing streak it’s hard to imagine the Bulls losing a third straight match at Loftus. It last happened in 2002.

Due to this Bookies have given the Lions an 11 point start – and have an offer of Bet 10 and Get 20 in bets. We think the Bulls will be hurting badly and will really take the game to the Lions. They also need a big win before they hit the road for Australia. Bulls to win by 14 or more.
