Chiefs vs Blues Super Rugby Preview

If it wasn’t for the big Crusaders match at Twickenham in England this weekend the match between the Chiefs and Blues would almost certainly be the big match in New Zealand this weekend – as strange as that sounds.

Both sides have shown flashes of brilliance but neither team has put in an 80 minute performance that they can really be proud of yet. The Blues have been the more consistent of the two teams but the Chiefs beating last weekend of the then table topping Sharks was pretty impressive.

When the Blues click they look like they could upset anyone but they need to put performances in like they did in the second half against the Hurricanes for the full 80.

In team selections this week the big news is that Joe Rokocoko has been re-instated on the wing for the Blues while over at the Chiefs – predictably – Mike Delany has replaced Stephen Donald who is injured. Delany’s flair could help the Chiefs attack so the jury is out on whether losing Donald is a blow.

Richard Kahui returns to partner Tana Umaga which should be interesting as Luke McAlister and Jared Payne were very good last week.

Overall these teams have played each other 15 times. The Blues have the edge in victories as they have won 9 and the Chiefs 6. In the last five clashes the Blues have won three and the Chiefs two.

In scoring averages the Chiefs have an advantage as they usually score 26 against the Blues who usually score 25 on average against the Chiefs. In Hamilton that average goes up to 28-23 in the Chiefs favour.

The Blues are second in the New Zealand Rugby conference standings and the Chiefs are last. Last year when these two teams met Rudi Wulf (now with Toulon) scored two tries as the Blues won 30-20 in Auckland.

The Bookies have given the Chiefs a two point start – with an offer of Bet 10 and Get 20 in bets. We think the Blues will figure out the Chiefs on around the 60 minute mark and the Blues should win by 6.
