Reds vs Cheetahs Super Rugby Preview

Ordinarily we would start our preview by pointing out that the Cheetahs have never won away from South Africa but that cannot be said after last week’s shock Cheetahs victory over the Waratahs.

The Cheetahs victory over the Waratahs wasn’t a fluke as they won by 20 points and outscored their opponents by two tries to none. However there has to be an element of the Waratahs taking the Cheetahs lightly and going into the match expecting to win.

This week the Cheetahs will have their fifth captain in six weeks as last week’s starting captain Andries Strauss has been ruled out due to injury. Wilhelm Steenkamp took over the captaincy after around 15 minutes so much of last week’s triumph can be attributed his guidance.

The Cheetahs should start the match brimming with confidence but the heat of Brisbane in March could be the deciding factor.

Ironically the Cheetahs opponents this week the Reds also kept their opponents last week from scoring more than three points. Both teams kept their opponents tryless and conceded just the one penalty goal.

The major difference is that the Reds returned to their 2010 playing style last week and this resulted in them scoring seven tries for a record Reds scoreline. Quade Cooper and Will Genia were back to the standard they set in 2010 which is why they are Australia’s best team currently.

In the five matches between the teams the Reds have won three and the Cheetahs two. Both of the Cheetahs wins have however come in Bloemfontein and the last two have been won by the Reds.

On average when the Reds play the Cheetahs they score 19 points against the Cheetahs who on average score 13 points. In Brisbane however the score changes from 19-13 to 23-8.

The Bookies have therefore given the Cheetahs a 16 point start for this match – with an offer of Bet 10 and Get 20 in bets. We think the Cheetahs will start well but the heat in Brisbane will tire the visitors more than the home side and the Reds will win this in the end comfortably. Reds to win by 10+ .
