Chiefs v Rebels Super Rugby preview

The first match on Saturday is between the Chiefs and the Rebels. You would have got very long odds if you had bet that the Rebels would be the team going into this match coming off a win and the Chiefs being without a win.

The Rebels last week showed a very different game plan to the one that they had in Round one. Their defence was outstanding and the Brumbies allowed them to stay in the match by conceding penalties.

This week wll be a real test for the Rebels though. This will be their first match against a New Zealand Super rugby team and more importantly their first away from home.

The Chiefs have said that they are determined to secure a their first win of the season. Probably more importantly for the home fans is that the Chiefs did not win a match in Hamilton last year and have not won a match in their last eight matches.

It has been sixteen matches (home and away) for the Chiefs since they won at home in Hamilton. That last home victory was at the height of their 2009 form as it was the 2009 Semi-final.

They did win a home match in 2010 but that was at Mount Maunganui. That Mount Maunganui match saw the Chiefs beating the Highlanders 27-21 and was their only win in their last 12 matches.

All of these fairly negative stats will make the Chiefs pretty desperate to win. They have brought back a number of their bigger names and Stephen Donald will be winning his 75th Super Rugby cap.

As the Chiefs have never played the Rebels it’s hard to look at form but the bookies have given the Rebels a 12 point start with an offer of Bet £10 and get £20 in bets. . If the Rebels defence is as tight as it was last week the score will be a lot closer. We are predicting the Chiefs to win by 9.
