Stormers vs Lions Super rugby preview

The Lions have not beaten the Stormers in their last nine attempts and the last time the Lions upset the Stormers was 10 years ago in 2001 when Laurie Mains was in charge.

The Lions have a poor record against the Stormers who on average score 26 points in these matches while on average the Lions score 20 points. Those averages are somewhat distorted by some early matches like the 1998 clash where the Lions won 7-41.

The closest the Lions have come to the Stormers in the last five years was an 11 point margin back in 2007.

As they had the bye last weekend it’s hard to predict how the Stormers will perform but with a largely unchanged squad compared to last year we can only expect that they will have lost very little.

Stormers coach Allister Coetzee has taken the surprising move of naming young Gary Van Aswegen at flyhalf but if his experiment goes wrong and Van Aswegen’s passing is a little off he can always bring on Peter Grant off the bench.

Lions coach John Mitchell has named a largely unchanged team as he promised to do after they ran the Bulls close but lost last weekend. The Lions were a different team compared to last year. They were trailing 5-24 at half time and Patric Cilliers revealed that Mitchell gave them a serious verbal bashing at half time which kicked them into gear.

The Lions went on to win the second half 15-0 so Mitchell clearly has a way with words. After the Bulls loss he said he was not interested in the Lions coming close and he will have been reading them the riot act all week in preparation for this weekend’s match.

However good the Lions were last week they could still not end their losing streak and have now lost their last 15 matches.

The Bookies have given the Lions a 10.5 point start and have an offer of Bet £10 and get £ 20 in bets. They are predicting the Stormers to win by 11 or more. We think the Lions are a bit better than that. Stormers to win by 6.
