Lam happy with Blues Super Rugby warm up

Blues coach Pat Lam says that he was pleased with his team’s first out for 2011 when they beat the Highlanders 31-29 in a pre-season Super Rugby match.

The Blues were trailing 29-17 half way through the second half against a near full-strength Highlanders team but the Blues dug deep and snatched a win.

“It’s a pleasing start,” Lam said on the Blues site after his team scored four tries in the trial.

“With about 12 or 13 guys missing from our regular squad, it was a good opportunity for the younger guys to perform and I thought they really stepped up. “

“We were under a lot of pressure early on away from home but the boys were able to turn that around and come back hard at them and that shows a lot of character,” he said.

“While there were plenty of positive aspects, there’s also a lot we need to work on but it was just great to get a game under our belts.

“It brings a lot of belief when the guys get a chance to try things and it works or almost pays off and for us as coaches it gives us something to work with.”

The Blues will now head north to Tutukaka for a week-long camp before facing the Hurricanes in Kerikeri on Friday (5.30pm kick-off) in their second pre-season match.
