Saints add to Sale Sharks’ troubles

Northampton closed the gap on the Leicester at the top of the Guinness Premiership table with a 15-7 victory over Sale at Edgeley Park on Sunday.

The defeat adds further pressure on Sale Sharks who are now closer to relegation.

It took 38 minutes for the game’s first points as the opening period was dominated by two determined defences cancelling each other out.

Saints winger Paul Diggin (pictured) provided the opening try for the visitors and Bruce Reihana added the extras as the teams entered the dressing rooms at 7-0.

After the break the Saints extended their lead to 15 points as Chris Ashton scored the second try before Shane Geraghty slotted the match’s first penalty in the 66th minute.

Sale finally scored their first points in the 76th minute as Ben Cohen powered over the try-line before Charlie Hodgson kicked the conversion, but it was too late and the Saints marched to victory.
