Saints’ Ashton double downs Newcastle Falcons

Northampton Saints claimed a comprehensive 25-13 victory over Newcastle in their Guinness Premiership clash at Franklins Gardens on Saturday.

The Saints stormed into the lead in the eighth minute as Chris Ashton opened the scoring with a try before Stephen Myler added the extras.

Falcons fly-half Jimmy Gopperth opened the visitors’ account in the 18th minute with a penalty, but Myler responded four minutes later to negate the New Zealander’s kick.

The sides were level again at 10-10 after Rob Vickers provided the visitors with their first try, which Gopperth converted. However, Lee Dickson crashed over the try-line for Northampton two minutes before the break to restore their lead.

Gopperth and Myler exchanged penalties after the interval as the Saints maintained their five-point lead. However, they took control of the match around the hour mark as Ashton bagged his second try and Myler extended the lead to 12 points with his conversion to clinch the win.
