Ashton hatrick seals Newcastle win for Saints

Northampton Saints cruised to a 8-28 victory over Newcastle Falcons at Kingston Park in the Guinness Premiership on Friday night.

Winger Chris Ashton scored a hat trick of tries.

Saints took the lead after seven minutes as wing Ashton scored the opening try, but Shane Geraghty failed to add the extras.

Newcastle fly-half Jimmy Gopperth reduced the gap to two points with his first penalty, before Geraghty negated it two minutes later.

Shortly before the break Tom Biggs leveled the scores with the Falcons’ opening try as the teams left the field at 8-8.

Seven minutes into the second half Ashton bagged his second try of the night, which Geraghty converted on this occasion to give Northampton the lead.

Geraghty extended Saints’ lead to 10 points on the hour-mark while Falcons were reduced to 14 men after Micky Young’s sin-binning.

The result was put beyond doubt in the 79th minute as Ashton completed a superb hat-trick of tries to secure the comprehensive win.

Final Score is Newcastle 8 (8) Northampton 28 (8)
