Northampton Saints bite Sale Sharks

Northampton Saints took advantage of some poor discipline from Sale Sharks to take a 21-16 win at Franklins Gardens.

Saints took the lead early when fly-half Shane Geraghty slotted the first penalty kick of the match, but Sale’s Charlie Hodgson brought the game level in the 10th minute.

After a tough 30 minutes, Northampton where given the advantage when Anitelea Tuilagi was shown a yellow card, and the hosts made the most their one-man advantage with tries from Ben Foden and Bruce Reihana in the final two minutes of the half, giving them a 15-3 lead at the break.

Geraghty provided the perfect start to Northampton’s second half with a successful penalty to open up a 15 point gap, but Sharks Flanker James Gaskell powered over the line to bring the visitors back into the match.

Northampton then found themselves in the same situation Sale suffered in the first half when they lost Mark Easter to the sin bin.

Sale immediately chipped off some of the lead with a penalty from Hodgson, but poor discipline from the visitors saw them throw their opportunity away when Brent Cockbain received Sale’s second yellow card of the day.

Stephen Myler successfully converted the resulting penalty kick to take Northampton to an eight point lead with eight minutes to go.

Hodgson added the final points of the match with a penalty kick in the 80th minute to end the game on 21-16 in favour of the Saints.
