Lerm rings the Currie Cup changes with Eagles

South Western District Eagles coach Johann Lerm has opted for a new halfback pairing as well as a new front row for Friday’s First Division semifinal rugby match against the Griffons at Outeniqua Park.

Gaffie du Toit and Dougie Hellmuth, who played against the Eastern Province Elephants last weekend, were both relegated to the bench.

This gives Ricardo Croy and Jandré Blom the opportunity to prove their worth ahead of the promotion/relegation matches in three week’s time.

Blom will also take over the kicking responsibility with Croy a valuable back-up.

Up front Wickus Harmse, Wayne Bennett and Brood van der Westhuizen had to make way for Tiaan de Kock, Junior Leota and Jaco Terblanche. Lerm has obviously beefed up his front row with Leota set to produce the spark.

Lerm said although his side will go flatout to beat the Northern Free Staters, it would nog be the end of the world if they lose.

“We are already looking at the play-offs. That is the bigger picture,” he said.

The SWD team is:

Bevin Fortuin (capt), Norman Nelson, Bobby Joubert, Isak Saayman, Baldwin McBean, Ricardo Croy, Jandré Blom, Jody Burch, Jacques Engelbrecht, Victor Joubert, Henry Grimes (vice-capt), Giant Mtyanda, Tiaan de Kock, Junior Leota, Jaco Terblanche.

Replacements: Wayne Bennett, Brood van der Westhuizen, Wikus Harmse, Hein Potgieter, Dougie Hellmuth, Gaffie du Toit, Joe Breytenbach.
