Gaffie du Toit gives Eagles coach a headache

South Western District Eagles coach Johann Lerm has a real headache ahead of the all-important First Division rugby clash against the Eastern Province Elephants at Outeniqua Park on Saturday.

Lerm must decide between Bobby Joubert and Bevin Fortuin at fullback, while he is also in two minds about Ricardo Croy and Gaffie du Toit at flyhalf.

Against the Valke at Kempton Park last weekend Joubert and Croy were outstanding.

Joubert scored four of SWD’s 11 tries in their 78-28 victory, while Croy contributed 23 points with a fine all-round performance.

He also scored a try.

And while Joubert and Croy ran the hapless Valke off their feet, Fortuin and Du Toit were watching from the bench.

The Eagles might have the luxury of two Springboks in their back division, but Joubert and Croy could just hold on to their spots in the starting line-up.

“Joubert and Croy both had outstanding games. I am usually not keen to change a winning side, but we know what he has in Bevin and Gaffie.”

It is going to be a hard call,” Lerm said.

The Eagles are currently in second spot, with EP third and the Griffons fourth.

The Welkom side hosts the unbeaten Pumas on Saturday.
