Eagles romp home against Valke in Currie Cup

Eagles fullback Bobby Joubert and his wingers Norman Nelson and Baldwin McBean were more lethal than the Bermuda Triangle when they ran in nine of the Eagles’ tries in their 78-28 romp against the Valke in Kempton park on Saturday.

The back three broke the Eagles’ try drought in perfect conditions on the East Rand to take the team from the Southern Cape back to the second spot in the First Division log.

Joubert scored four tries with right winger Nelson adding a hat-trick and McBean two of the 11 tries.

Flyhalf Ricardo Croy, who stood in for Springbok Gaffie du Toit, scored a try, converted ten of the 11 tries and added a penalty goal for a tally of 26 points in his first outing in the number 10 jersey.

Springboks Du Toit and Bevin Fortuin could find it hard to regain their places after Joubert and Croy’s performances.

The Eagles could only score 18 tries in their previous eight games this season, but then again the Valke have the poorest defensive record in the country.

They scored four tries for another point on the log, but they have conceded 71 tries in their nine games thus far this season.

Flyhalf Christiaan Els, on loan from the Pumas, scored a brace for the losers.
