Griffons too good for Eagles in Currie Cup

The Griffons have Cecil Afrika to thank for their 26-21 victory over the South Western Districts in Welkom on Saturday.

The young Griffons record try scorer dotted down twice to set up a victory which moves the Griffons up to second place on the Currie Cup First Division log.

The Eagles however, have a game in hand and are only three points behind.

Both Eagles players on loan, Vincent Gwavu (Blue Bulls) and Dougie Hellmuth (Griquas) got on the scoreboard for the visitors.

Hellmuth made a huge impact on the game when he replaced Warren Malgas.

The rest of the Eagles’ points were scored by Springbok flyhalf Gaffie du Toit, who kicked three penalties and a conversion.

Griffons flyhalf Kennedy Tsimba relinquished the goal-kicking responsibilities to scrumhalf Hugo Kleynhans, who slotted two penalties and a conversion.
