Currie Cup Eagles scrape home against Border

The South Western District Eagles were lucky to beat a highly motivated Border Bulldog side 14-13 in a First Division rugby at Outeniqua Park on Saturday.

The Eagles led 11-0 at halftime.

The Bulldogs came close to securing victory. In the dying moments fullback Reinhardt Gerber attempted a penalty from the touchline, but the ball hit the upright. On the day the Border men were the best side.

They dominated proceedings up front and never allowed the Eagles to get momentum. As the home team’s pack of forwards battled to stamp their authority, the backline also came under pressure. The two best forwards on display were both Bulldogs.

Lock forward Samora Fihlani and tighthead prop Buhle Mxunyelwa were outstanding throughout.

Fihlani scored his side’s only try, while Mxunyelwa was the Man of the Match. For the Eagles right wing Norman Nelson and scrumhalf Jandré Blom did a stering job in securing victory.
