Kavaliers coach to ring the changes

With the warning lights flashing brightly for the Boland Kavaliers rugby side at the bottom of the Currie Cup log, coach Deon Davids is set to yield the axe for next Friday’s match against the Sharks in Wellington.

A bitterly disappointed Davids was not very talkative on Sunday, but he realises the time has come to take action. “We made foolish mistakes against the Leopards last Friday in Potchefstroom and by doing that made things so easy for the home side,” Davids said.

The Leopards registered their first Currie Cup win of the season by downing the Kavaliers 50-6, running in six easy tries to one. With the Kavaliers having their backs against the wall, Davids is feeling the strain. “It is difficult times under difficult circumstances,” he said.

“We still lose too many balls in contact situations and do not make full use of our chances on attack. It is extremely disappointing to say the least. Davids’ problems, however, are growing by the day.

With only a small group of players to work with, sickness, injury and a lack of form have not made things easier for him. During the next day or two Davids will have to make some big desicions.

The Kavaliers now have three home games on the trott against the Sharks, Griquas and the Blue Bulls and he will have to field a side that are capable of competing against the bigger unions.

But if Davids has the depth among his ranks to do that, it has yet to been seen. The Kavaliers are in trouble – and heading for a relegation play-off at the end of the season.
