SA paper says Meyer unlikely to return to Tigers

Former Bulls coach Heyneke Meyer’s future with the English Premiership team Leicester Tigers will be known this week – but it will come as no surprise if he doesn’t return to the Tigers, according to a report in the Afrikaans Sunday Rapport.

The newspaper reports that the concession of the British club for Meyer to return on compassionate grounds – both his wife’s parents are suffer from cancer and are very ill – expires on Sunday, according to Rapport.

Meyer, who has an outstanding record with the Bulls and Blue Bulls, started coaching with Leicester this season.

He has made a huge impact on the top English club and his departure for South Africa undoubtedly upset their planning.

The newspaper reports that Meyer was not prepared to discuss his decision, except to say that he will pursue the matter with Peter Wheeler, CEO of Leicester, in the week.

However, the fact that Meyer is still in South Africa could be an indication that he won’t be returning to Leicester. His young children have apparently been registered with a primary school in Pretoria, according to Rapport.

Former Springbok Derick Hougaard, who followed Meyer to Leicester, was also recently quoted in England as saying that he didn’t expect Meyer to return.

Meyer has already being linked to the South East Cape franchise, although the chairman of Eastern Province, Cheeky Watson, says he has never even met Meyer but would like someone like him to guide the fortunes of the proposed franchise.

Rapport says it is possible that Meyer will be used by the Bulls in a consulting capacity.
