Late blitz from Wasps downs Saracens

London Wasps ran out 33-24 victors over city rivals Saracens on Saturday after a blitz of tries in the final minutes ensured excitement at Adams Park.

Most of the game was a boot-driven affair, but four tries in the last 10 minutes made sure fans were not left disappointed at a lack of running rugby.

Danny Cipriani opened the scoring for Wasps in the fifth minute with a penalty, before Glen Jackson returned the favour with a kick of his own to make matters even a minute later.

Cipriani added another penalty in the 12th minute, before Sarries went down to 14 men when Springbok Wikus van Heerden was sent to the sin bin.

Jackson restored parity for Sarries with a place kick in the 29th minute as both sides struggled to break the try deadlock.

The battle of the boot continued in the 39th minute when Cipriani kicked another penalty to take them into the break at 9-6 to Wasps.

Sarries broke out of their shell in the second half, with Jackson slotting a penalty in the 46th minute before Noah Cato scored the game’s first try four minutes later. Jackson couldn’t bag the extra points though as the score remained 9-14.

The visitors pulled further clear in the 66th minute with a penalty before Dave Walder kicked one for Wasps to ensure his side stayed in the hunt at 12-17.

Wasps then opened the floodgates in the final 10 minutes, scoring three converted tries. Rob Hoadley got the first in the 71st minute, followed by Paul Sackey in the 73rd and Josh Lewsey just before the whistle.

Cato got his brace in the final minute of the game, which Jackson converted, but it was not enough to prevent Wasps from taking the win.
