Castres to sign up Montauban coaching duo

French championship strugglers Castres will be coached by the present handlers of rivals Montauban next season, Castres caretaker president Jean-Philippe Swiadek said on Monday.

Laurent Travers and former France international Laurent Labit have impressed at Montauban, taking them into this season’s European Cup and Swiadek also knows Labit well having played with him.

“I already know one of them, Laurent Labit, because I was a team-mate of his and we won the French championship (with Castres) in 1993,” said Swiadek, who is the former manager of the club and has replaced Pierre-Yves Revol as president of the side, after the latter was elected president of the National Rugby League (LNR).

Swiadek, who has already told the players, said that the duo were the best couple of coaches in the country.

“I proposed to the club a project for next season,” said Swiadek.

“Some people thought it was too early but I believe quite to the contrary , that it is imperative to build our team from now till then.” Revol had said in an interview published on Monday that Castres’ present coach Alain Gaillard would not have his contract renewed.

Castres have had a dreadful campaign both domestically and in the European Cup, the three-time French champions presently lie second bottom in the championship with eight defeats in 12 matches and look certain to exit the European Cup at the first stage after losing 33-3 to Leinster on Saturday.

Montauban by contrast are seventh, 10 points ahead of Castres.
