Dallaglio to direct Wasps after takeover

Former England captain Lawrence Dallaglio has joined the board at London Wasps following a takeover of the Premiership club.

The six-time English champions confirmed Wednesday that Steve Hayes, who was already a director, had become their new owner after buying the shares of Chris Wright and John O’Connell.

Wright is set to become life president, while Dallaglio, former captain Mark Rigby and business adviser Mike Brooks will join the board alongside current members John O’Connell, Ivor Montlake and Tony Copsey.

“The appointment of Lawrence and Mark to the board shows there is a strong understanding of the rugby business as part of the new structure,” director of rugby Ian McGeechan said.

“Both men bring an understanding and passion for Wasps with them to their new roles, who have both always shown themselves to be strong and effective forward thinkers.”

Dallaglio spent his entire career with Wasps before retiring in May with a second Heineken Cup title and victory in the Premiership playoff final.

The 36-year-old Dallaglio won four Six Nations titles with England, for whom he played in every backrow position, and was a key member of the 2003 World Cup-winning team.

Since retiring, he has been involved with charity projects and worked in corporate hospitality at Twickenham.

Hayes is also managing director at Wycombe football club, which shares its Adams Park stadium with Wasps and is the only side in England’s 92-team professional leagues yet to be beaten this season.

His first task will be to try and arrest Wasps’ slide this season, with the team ninth in the 12-team standings and closer to the relegation zone than the playoff positions.
