Thompson will not shed his Sainthood

England and Northampton Saints hooker Steve Thompson has moved to quash recent speculation about an imminent departure from Franklin’s Gardens.

Despite having two years left on his current contract, Thompson has been linked with a number of French clubs in recent weeks and admitted in the last few days to speaking to Brive about a possible transfer.

But on Tuesday the club announced that after talks with Thompson, and after the hooker had further consulted his family, Thompson had re-iterated his commitment to the club for the forseeable future.

“This is the outcome we had hoped for all along. Steve has a two year deal still to run and we are not in the business of selling our best players,” said Saints Chief Executive Allan Robson.

“We all love ‘Wally’ and are delighted that he has opted to remain with us and be a big part of the club’s future.

Thompson, who was this week ruled out of the Six Nations with a neck injury, said that he was just as excited to stay at ‘home’ as he would have been to cross the channel.

“I’ve been at the club now for a long time and I did have to weigh up the opportunity on the table from France as it was an exciting prospect.

“But Saints is my home, it’s a terrific club to play for and all I want to do now is get back on the field as soon as I can and help the boys climb the table.”
