Masoe signs with French club Castres

All Black & Hurricanes openside flanker Chris Masoe has agreed a move to French side Castres and will move at the end of the Air New Zealand Cup.

Masoe, 29 plays for Wellington in the Air New Zealand Cup and the Hurricanes in the Super 14 and has signed a two-year deal with the Top 14 side.

Masoe played 20 Test for the All Blacks and originally missed out on selection for the All Black squad but got called up when captain Richie McCaw injured his ankle and the preferred back-up number seven Daniel Braid had been ruled out with a calf injury.

Braid and McCaw both appear to be fit now and Masoe has not been selected in the matchday 22 for either of the Tests that he was in the squad for.

Castres president Pierre-Yves Revol said on the Club’s website that negotiations between the club and Masoe had been going on for a couple of months.

“We were in contact with Chris Masoe for over two months.”

“If he had not been recalled in the squad of the All-Blacks for the Tri Nations after the injury Richie Mc Caw, he could have joined the club in July.

“I think his arrival will give us a potential very interesting 3rd row.”

“We also know that we have a player leader who will acclimatise quickly to our environment. “
