World Cup Sidestepping Sunday Ads Ban

According to the NZPA TV3 owner Canwest, is seeking an exemption to the long-standing television ban on Sunday morning advertising during the Rugby World Cup.

With five of the All Blacks’ possible seven games played in France next year airing on Sunday morning NZ time, Canwest is worried the advertising ban between 6am and midday could hit its earnings.

The games include the semifinal and final.

A spokesman for Broadcasting Minister Steve Maharey told the Dominion Post the broadcaster was asking for an exemption from section 81 of the Broadcasting Act.

The request had been passed to Sports Minister Trevor Mallard.
