Wasps ease to victory over Newcastle

London Wasps continued to hold a Guinness Premiership play-off spot close to their hearts with a 13-32 win over Newcastle Falcons at Kingston Park on Wednesday.

Danny Cipriani’s boot and four tries by four different players saw Wasps turn in a solid team showing against the struggling Falcons side.

A Jonny Wilkinson-less Newcastle got on the board first, when centre Tom May slotted a penalty in the sixth minute.

After much hard running, Wasps drew the scores level in the 19th minute. Wilkinson’s main rival for the England fly half berth, Cipriani, made no mistake in kicking the penalty.

Wasps went into the lead in the 26th minute, when flanker James Haskell crossed the try line. Cipriani failed to slot the conversion though, leaving Falcons with the chance to catch up.

And that they did, when May added to his points tally with a try in the 29th minute. That brought the scores level at 8-8, where it stayed when Rob Miller missed the conversion.

The tempo of the game increased dramatically at this juncture, as Wasps again went into the lead. Flanker Tom Rees got his name in the book with a try in the 33rd minute, which Cipriani converted to take the score to 8-15.

Falcons would have drawn level five minutes later, had Miller not missed his second conversion of the evening. Right winger Ollie Phillips scored the try to take the score to 13-15 at the break.

Wasps came out flying for the second half and scored almost immediately. England winger Paul Sackey bagged a try in the 43rd minute, which Cipriani converted for the two extra points. He then added another three points with a penalty on the hour mark to make it 13-25.

Wasps got their fourth try and the bonus point in the 76th minute, when Josh Lewsey crossed the line. Cipriani dutifully added the two points to ensure Wasps went into the final round of the season with a good chance of a play-off spot.
