Stormers to wear red armbands for fire-fighters

The Stormers will wear red armbands in tomorrow’s Super Rugby clash against the Sharks at Newlands, as a show of solidarity with and as a mark of respect for all the fire-fighters after the recent Cape Fires.

Cape Town’s South Peninsula has been hard hit by blazing fires this past week, but the true spirit of the city continued to shine through in the toughest circumstances possible.

The decision to wear red armbands was made after a conversation between Stormers coach Allister Coetzee and skipper Duane Vermeulen on Wednesday, before it was put to the entire team on Thursday.

“As a playing group we wanted to show our support for the selfless bravery of those that battled fires across all the communities of the region this past week,” said captain Vermeulen on Friday.

The Stormers No.8 continued: “In addition, whatever and wherever the issue, disaster or hardship it seems to bring the best out of the people of the Cape. It’s been a testing week for the City of Cape Town, in particular, but it has been remarkable to see people stand together and all the good that has come out of a bad situation.

“As the Stormers we would like to show our support in some way for our beautiful city, the region, the brave and selfless fire-fighters and the amazing community spirit that continues to stand tall – especially when times are tough.

“Tomorrow is obviously a big game for us and we, as players, will continue to represent the Cape region – and its amazing people – with pride whenever we wear a Stormers jersey.”

The Stormers are already planning to host some of the fire-fighters at Newlands next Saturday (March 14), when the Chiefs from New Zealand visit Cape Town.
