All Black code-hopper and Rugby World Cup winner Sonny Bill Williams has been ruled out of the Olympics after injuring his Achilles.
Williams has already won two Rugby World Cups and was attempting to win Gold in the Olympics but was injured in New Zealand’s loss to Japan.
Williams was helped from the field after he fell to the ground in a tackle before the Japan side pulled off a shock 12-14 victory in Rio.
The New Zealand Olympic Team tweeted after the match that Williams has been ruled out of the tournament with a partial Achilles rupture.
Thirty-one-year-old Williams has been replaced by Sione Molia.
Williams was included in the All Blacks Rugby Championship squad but at this stage it is unclear whether he will be able to recover in time to feature for the All Blacks.
The All Blacks opening match is against the Wallabies on Saturday, August 20 in Sydney.
