Sharks v Chiefs Super Rugby Preview

Out of the last five Super Rugby matches between the Durban based Sharks and the Hamilton based Chiefs the Hamilton side have won all five.

Overall the Sharks have played the Chiefs 17 times in Super Rugby since 1998 and the Sharks have won 7 matches and lost 10.

That gives the Sharks a record of winning just 41% of their matches against the Chiefs. The average score when the Sharks play the Chiefs is : Sharks 24 Chiefs 26.

This weekend the match will be played in Durban which is home for the Sharks and where the teams have played 8 times.

In those 8 matches played in Durban the Sharks have won four and lost four giving them a 50/50 record.

The average score when the Sharks play the Chiefs in Durban is : Sharks 30 Chiefs 25.

As noted earlier the Sharks have lost their last five matches against the Chiefs they have also not beaten the Chiefs at home since May 2008 as the Chiefs have won the last two contests there.

The Sharks made a slow start to the season as they lost to the Cheetahs in their opening fixture and after five matches they have only won two matches so far – the Lions and the Cheetahs.

Although the Sharks won last week in Bloemfontein they are still fairly desperate for victories and this week they have defied a SARU request to rest Springbok players who have played for five consecutive matches.

Instead of rotating their squad the Sharks have named a team with just one injury enforced change as Marco Wentzel comes in for the injured Pieter-Steph du Toit.

The Chiefs have made four changes to their team for this week and brought in a new centre partnership in Andrew Horrell and Seta Tamanivalu taking over from injured pair Tim Nanai-Williams and Sonny Bill Williams.

The Chiefs have also named Jamie Mackintosh and Siate Tokolah in the front row and there are six changes on the replacements bench.

The Bookies have given the Sharks a 1 point start for this Match – with an offer of a FREE $150 BET. The Chiefs form this year has been undeniably good. They beat the Crusaders by a record score and outclassed the Stormers last week. Their history in Durban suggests that they should keep winning this week. The Chiefs should edge this by one point.

This Match will be shown on TV in NZ, Aus, SA and in the UK on Sky Sports 3/HD on the red button.
