Sale Sharks held on at the AJ Bell stadium to beat former champions Northampton Saints who have now lost two out of their three opening games of the Premiership season.

Sammy Tuitupou had to withdraw shortly before the match but his replacement Sam James scored the opening try for Sale.

Sale outscored Northampton Saints by two tries to one in the contest

Steve Diamond’s men went into a 13-6 half-time lead through Sam James’ try and eight points from the boot of Danny Cipriani.

Stephen Myler provided Northampton’s response with two penalties in the opening period and a converted try after the break, but Will Addison’s touchdown sealed the win for Sale.

The Sharks enjoyed a bonus-point victory over Worcester Warriors last weekend and they were looking to build on that performance. However, it was the Saints who controlled proceedings early on by dominating both possession and territory, but they couldn’t make that count on the scoreboard.

Instead, the hosts were the team to accrue the first points when Cipriani kicked a penalty. He added a second soon after with Sale on top, but Northampton hit back and levelled matters via the accurate boot of Myler, who was on target twice from the tee in quick succession.

6-6 was an accurate reflection of the play before the Sharks put together their best move of the match. Josh Beaumont received the ball on the left-hand side and the number eight passed to Sam James. The centre, standing in for the injured Sam Tuitupou, chipped over the top and re-gathered for a superb individual effort.

Cipriani’s conversion made it 13-6 at the break before that buffer became 14 points minutes into the second period when Addison collected Mike Haley’s inch perfect kick.

Myler crossed the whitewash to reduce the deficit to seven points and Northampton pressed for the score that would tie the game, but Sale held on for an impressive win.
